He is also one of the icons of the 20-century avant-garde Surrealist movement, whose dreamlike images, drawn from the depths of the unconscious, he deployed in paintings, sculptures, prints and fashion, as well as in film collaborations with Luis Buñuel and Alfred Hitchcock.ĭalí was born in Figueres, Catalonia, and even as a youngster, displayed the sensitivity, sharp perception and vivid imagination that would later define his artworks. Instantly recognizable by his waxed, upturned mustache, the flamboyant Salvador Dalí is one of modern art’s most distinctive figures. The sixth image in the suite of lithographs is the reinterpretation of his own masterpiece, The Persistence of Memory. In typical Dali fashion, he includes himself in his pantheon of great master painters. Dali considered these paintings to be the most important masterpieces of 17th Century European paintings. Changes In Great Masterpieces is a suite of six original lithographs, five of which are reinterpretations by Salvador Dalí of works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Raphael, and Velasquez. This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Peter Lucas. It is part of Dali's important suite of lithographs, "Changes in Great Masterpieces" published in 1974 by the Phyllis Lucas Gallery in New York City. The piece shows melting clocks in a landscape setting. Hand-signed lower right and numbered lower left, this original lithograph is based on Dali's best known 1931 painting The Persistence of Memory which is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
